Ball mill is common grinding equipment used in the mineral processing plant, it is also the key equipment for grinding after crushing and screening operation. According to the classification of grinding way, the ball mill can be divided into dry ball mill and wet ball mill. But, what are the differences between dry ball mill and wet ball mill?
The differences between dry ball mill and wet ball mill mainly reflected in three aspects: first, different working principles; Second, different equipment structure; Three, different application.
1. Working principles of dry ball mill and wet ball mill
When the dry ball mill is running, the material enters into the first bin of the ball mill uniformly through the hollow shaft screw. The bin is equipped with a ladder lining board or corrugated lining board and equipped with steel balls with different specifications. The centrifugal force produced by the cylinder rotates brings the steel ball to a certain height then fall down, which have the crushing and grinding impact on the material.
After the material is coarsely ground in the first bin, it enters the second bin through the single-layer compartment board. The bin is equipped with a flat lining board and steel balls with different specifications to further grinding. Finally, the qualified materials are discharged through the unloading grates, the grinding operation is finished.
The working principle of wet ball mill and the dry ball mill is roughly the same, but different. Wet ball mill needs to add the appropriate amount of water or anhydrous ethanol in the grinding process, which means there are certain requirements on the grinding concentration. And the amount of water is determined by the nature of the material. The qualified materials are discharged out of the cylinder by discharging part, and the unqualified materials are returned to the wet ball mill for regrinding.
2. Equipment structure of dry ball mill and wet ball mill
Dry ball mill and wet ball mill both include feeding part, discharging part, rotary part, transmission part (reducer, small transmission gear, motor, electric control) and other main parts.
The difference is that the structure of dry ball mill is more complex than the structure of the wet ball mill. Its discharge port is a straight cylinder, and equipped with a winding device, dust flue and dust collector, which are also determined by its working principle. The structure of the wet ball mill is simple, without too many auxiliary accessories. The outlet of wet ball mill is horn-shaped, and built-in screw device for discharging.
3. Application of dry ball mill and wet ball mill
Generally speaking, dry ball mill is suitable for all kinds of metal ore and non-metal ore, etc., including the materials that react with water, such as cement, marble, other building stones, or those products requiring storage and sales in the form of powder. In addition, if the mineral processing plant is located in a dry area, dry ball mill can be applied for water conservation.
Wet ball mill is suitable for metal ores and non-metal ores, including gold ore, silver ore, copper ore, iron ore, molybdenum ore, phosphate ore, feldspar, fluorite mine and so on. The wet ball mill can be used as long as the material contact with water does not influence the quality of the final product.
It should be noted that when using a wet ball mill, the ratio of steel ball, material and water should be determined through mineral processing test to ensure the ideal grinding effect. As for the choice of grinding equipment, it depends on the follow-up operations, product properties and production costs.
Dry ball mill has the smooth discharging effect, no full-grinding phenomenon. The cylinder of dry ball mill does not need cooling, and has a long service life, low failure rate.
Wet ball mill has superior performance, higher grinding efficiency and lower requirement for ore moisture content. In addition, wet ball mill needs fewer auxiliary equipment and simple material transportation device, so the investment is about 5%-10% lower than that of dry ball mill.
From the perspective of the economic effect of grinding, most concentrators will use the wet ball mill, because wet ball mill has strong adaptability to materials, continuous production and large crushing ratio. Besides, wet ball mill has higher fineness and better mineral processing effect.
